Penelope was the wife of the hero Ulysses. According to the Greek myth, she was the queen of Ithaca. She remained faithful to him during his 20 year absence. When her many suitors came for her hand, she said she would marry as soon as she had finished weaving a shroud for Laertes, her father-in-law. In order to remain true to Ulysses, she wove the shroud by day and unpicked her work by night. When Ulysses returned, they were reunited. The Phelegran Fields which surround Naples are said to be the area where Ulysses roamed. Lago Averno was the gateway to the underworld among many other sites around the area.
This necklace was inspired by the ancient gold crowns from Greece and Greater Greece. They were primarily funerary crowns but I have also read that they were often worn on special occasions.
